Follow the sound of my heartbeat.
Before Longshot, Robbie and Miyuki had left for camp, Alison had politely, but firmly asked Robbie and Miyuki to find fun diversions in camp. Lengthy ones. She wanted her husband all to herself at least until sunset.
It took about an hour to organize, but when Alison finally retired upstairs, the lights were out and the shades drawn on all the floors. The only illumination came from tiny, floating candles in shallow water dishes placed on every other step on the stairs. One the landing of each floor, she had placed an item for him to find.
On the first floor, at the bottom of the stairs, a CD copy of his favorite French singer's newest album was tied with a gold ribbon. A tag attached to the ribbon read, Follow the lights.
On the second floor, a package wrapped in shiny red paper and silk ribbon. The tag read, Don't open this yet.
On the third floor landing, a second package was wrapped in white, shiny paper and ribbon. The tag read, Not yet. Keep moving.
On the fourth, two long-stemmed wine glasses waited for him.
The candles continued up the stairs to their bedroom. Inside, dozens of red candles of every size were lit in containers all over the bedroom. Spread out in front of the balcony doors was a soft fleece blanket. Several covered dishes were set out on it and two bottles chilled in a bucket of ice.
The tiny, floating candles created a path from the door to the bathroom where rose scented steam rolled out from under the door. Inside, Alison was sitting on the edge of the filled bathtub in a red silk robe. She drew small circles on the tile at her feet with her toe and waited for her husband to arrive. Hopefully, it would be before the food or the water got cold.

Then he fingered her robe a little. "Do you count as a gift, too?"

The fingers on her robe made her grin. "Everything tied with a bow is a gift for you." She fiddled with the silk rope belt tied in a bow at her waist. "But, you have to open them in the order I tell you, okay? And this one's last."
She grinned and pushed his hands away from her robe. Then she picked up the largest package from off to the side where she'd stashed it and handed it to him first. This gift was the tricky one. Miyuki had told her that a gift of clothing was traditional. She had wracked her mind for a full day before she'd come up with something.
Inside, under the bright red wrapping, was a white box containing a new leather jacket. Instead of a solid piece of leather like his old one had bee, this one was in black leather patches stitched together. It was heavier than his old one, more sturdy. A patch of gold colored leather cut into the shape of an eight pointed star was stitched onto the left side of the chest.
She just hoped that the reason for him needing a new one didn't ruin the moment.

He grinned and wiggled a little to get into his new jacket without elbowing Alison at all. It was heavier but still comfy. Longshot twisted a little and cupped Alison's chin between both of his hands. He could have said 'thank you.' He decided kissing it was better.

She kissed him long and slow, and would have happily spent the rest of the night doing so, but there were more gifts to open. She drew back slowly and wrapped her arms around him, pressing both hands over the star on his jacket.
"I know your old one had your star on the right side, but I had them put this one on the left. I want your lucky star protecting your hearts when I'm not there to." She hugged him tightly and then reached for the other package.
Inside the white package were the two chocolate hearts she and Miyuki has made after their shopping trip. They were both a little larger than her open palm and higher at the edges than in the middle so that she could fill the middles with cannoli cream.
