Just the facts.
Two weeks later, as arranged, Alison and Longshot were back in Dr. Crusher's office in the Nexus. Alison was anxious to hear what the doctor's scans and tests had concluded. She was hoping with the technology Dr. Crusher had that the doctor would be able to tell them definitively whether or not her previous miscarriage had just been a tragic combination of stress and environment as she had always thought. Or if the situation was much worse and her DNA was not compatible with her husband's. Alison would be inconsolable if that were the case.
Now, she waited -- as patiently as possible -- as Dr. Crusher set up her medical files and gathered her information for their visit. She sat in one of the chairs in front of the desk. Longshot was beside her in the other chair and she had a tight hold on his hand. Her thumb rubbed restlessly against the back of his hand.
There had to be good news. She needed good news.

"So, what about the baby? Its health and such? Growing okay? Tell us everything." She grinned. She was only half teasing. Absolutely any information the doctor could give would be appreciated.

She gestured behind her o some of the new machines she had set up. "I also have a shot I've managed to formulate for your unique body chemistry that should also help knock the chance of miscarrying down to nil. Provided you do not do anything strenuous like help lead a rebellion again."
Beverly gave them both a level look that said she would brook no rebellions while trying to get this baby born.
no subject
Particularly the part about reducing her chances of miscarrying. She'd take ten shots a day if that was what it took. Just one sounded even better.
She raised her right hand and grinned at the doctor. "I solemnly swear not to lead or join any rebellions for at leas the next year. And I would very much like to see the gestational sac and things. We never got to see them before."
no subject
He had no idea about this swearing thing, but his promises were good.
"Though... uh, is vigorous... sex too much of a strain?" He flushed a little. He didn't want Alison to get th idea he wasn't enjoying what they were currently doing, but he kinda liked some of the fast and hard stuff. He had always been careful about making sure it wouldn't hurt Ali at all.
no subject
It was a fair question, though. They had only assumed they had to be slow and gentle. Knowing for sure would be better.
no subject
"Well, as long as you're not hurting Alison at all, I don't see why it would be. Your baby is fully protected by the amniotic sac, a thin-walled bag that holds the fetus and surrounding fluid, and the strong muscles of the uterus. There's also a thick mucus plug that seals the cervix and helps guard against infection. The penis does not come into contact with the fetus during sex." She steepled her fingers in front of her a bit. "As Alison gets farther along in the pregnancy, you may have to consider new positions, but there shouldn't be any problems with any type of sex."

She gave her husband's hand a squeeze. She could guess how happy he was with this news.
no subject
"Thanks, Doctor Beverly! Now, how about those scans and pictures?"
no subject
"Need me to lay down again?" She hiked a thumb back at the exam table.
no subject
As she stood up, she pulled the tricorder out of her pocket. She gestured over to the table. "Well, get the preliminary scans out of the way, and then let you see what's going on inside."
no subject
She looked over and smiled at her husband. "Gonna come stand by me?"
no subject
His grin had not disappeared as he stepped up beside Ali. The doctor had stuck to the other side last time, so this was the safe side. He grabbed his wife's hand. "Always," he replied softly.
There were blinky lights around, but these were good blinky lights.
no subject
She was excited more than she was anxious, now. They'd see the life that was growing inside her, soon.

She paused and blinked. She punched a few buttons and scanned Alison again. A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "Well, that's interesting..."
She shut the tricorder and put the hand unit back in the top. She dropped the tricorder into her smock pocket and pulled the imaging equipment over. "Well, Alison, I think I have more news for you. There's a certain hormone that women release when pregnant. It's what the pregnancy tests of your time detect in the urine. The average for a single birth is about 70 mIU. Yours is currently 201 mIU."
no subject
And then when she heard what was so interesting, it took a minute for the information to sink into the right places. Most importantly, that the doctor was speaking about 'single births' as if that was no longer what they were dealing with...
"Mine is... Wait. So, you're saying... there's more than one baby?"
201 was a big number. She was a little concerned about just how many more babies they were discussing.
no subject
"H-How many?"
no subject
Multiple babies. That could either be the greatest thing that had ever happened to them. Or, something huge that would test them to their limits. Her limits, anyway.

She leaned back and eyed the monitor that blinked to life a little behind her. She moved the wand over Alison and the imagery changed on the monitor to follow her movements. It took a minute of adjusting the sensor's position before Beverly held it in one spot. She reached over with her free hand and turned the monitor to face the stunned couple.
"Longshot and Alison, you're now the happy parents to a set of twins," she announced blithely. She pointed at a large spot. "That is Alison's bladder."
Her finger moved down to two smaller, slightly kidney bean-shaped spots. "This and this are your two babies currently."
no subject
A sound caught somewhere between a hiccup and a laugh emerged from behind her hand as she stared at the screen and her eyes brimmed with tears. Twins!
"We're having twins!" She squeezed Longshot's hand tightly and started to giggle even as tears spilled over from her eyes.
No wonder she had been having trouble standing in his vision!
no subject
He glanced down at Alison and saw the tears. He started to reach to brush them gently away. Except that's when his knees decided to buckle.
no subject
She quickly brushed the tears from her eyes and started to sit up. "Are you okay, Longshot?"
no subject
She looked down at the readings. "Looks like the Daddy to be just got a little too excited. All his readings are normal. No irregularities. No change in blood pressure. Heart rhythm is a little up, but nothing in the dangerous levels."
Besides the fact he was clearly conscious and looking up at Beverly. She put away the tricorder and shifted to help Longshot back up. "C'mon, let's get you sitting up by Alison."
no subject
When he was settled beside her, she wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled up to his side.
"Stay calm, Daddy. There's two of us. We can handle twins." She smiled softly at him.
no subject
He smiled ruefully. "So which of our little beans will call me Daddy first? The one on the left or the one on the right?"
They were magic beans, too. Had to be. They were made from pure love and devotion.
no subject
"Hmmm..." She looked back over at the monitor and pretended to give it serious thought. "The one on the left."
"Of course, these are children of yours. So I doubt that one stays on the left for very long. I fully expect them to be doing back flips any week now..."
