He flashed a nervous smile and carefully put the envelope into her hand. He thought about telling her not to rip it open but figured that might not sound right. So he scratched his forehead instead.

He chewed on his lower lip slightly. If she did rip it open, he hoped she wouldn't rip the two tickets inside the envelope. They were for their favorite French-singing lady. She had a concert March 10th in France.

But more importantly, he hoped she didn't rip into the poem (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v21/sonofarize/Ali%20and%20Longshot/dazzlovetanka.jpg) written on the inside of the folded paper. It was in his own handwriting, which he thought always looked clumsy compared to hers. He hadn't signed it. That would make it seem like a contract, and even if it was for the best of reasons, he was still uneasy about that. But it was in writing. Small step towards getting ready to sign that little thing he hold been told about. The marriage certificate coming up in May.
